What is Differin (Adapalene) Gel/Cream?

Differin is a topical gel or cream (available in two formulations) that is used to treat moderate to severe acne.

Its active ingredient is Adapalene, which belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids (other retinoids include tretinoin and isotretinoin). Retinoids help to reduce inflammation, they are also effective in reducing black and white head spot formation on the top layer of the skin.

Adapalene is often better tolerated than other retinoids like tretinoin but exhibits the same positive effects. This is because it is a third-generation retinoid, an advancement on the traditional medicines. It is often prescribed before other retinoids because of this.

How do I apply the Cream/Gel?

APPLY AN EVEN THIN LAYER of cream/gel over the affected areas ONCE A DAY AT NIGHT BEFORE BED. Avoid application near the eyes, lips, nostrils or any other sensitive areas of skin. Clean and dry the affected skin before application. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after use.

DO NOT APPLY TO BROKEN SKIN.

How long does it take to see results?

As with any topical skin medicines for the treatment of acne, visible results may take up to eight weeks to show. It is important to apply the treatment regularly in order for it to be effective.

Can everyone with Acne use Differin to treat it?

Differin is not suitable for everyone. Those with a hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients should not be using this treatment. While using Differin, patients should avoid sunlight and UV lamps, discontinue use of other acne products containing retinoids or benzoyl peroxide and avoid using products that are irritate, dry or exfoliate the skin.

Pregnant patients should avoid using any retinoid product including Adapalene. Differin can be used by breastfeeding women, although application on or around the chest should be avoided.
